On top of the 200 metre high volcanic hill known as El Panecillo stands ‘La Virgen de Quito’. This famous monument is dedicated to the virgin Mary. Because of its imposing height, it stands out from nearly everywhere in the city. For this reason, it is commonly used as a reference point.
