The historic Coast Road Church in Wainuiomata is one of the valley’s oldest surviving buildings and the oldest original Methodist church in the Wellington region. Built in 1866 by early settlers, the small wooden church stands beside Wainuiomata’s oldest churchyard on Coast Road. The land was originally purchased by pioneer Richard Prouse Senior, who had vowed to build a church if he prospered after emigrating from England. Timber for the church was pit sawn locally, and much of the construction was carried out by members of the community as a labour of faith and dedication.
