Monterey Pine forest on the slopes around Wellington Harbour. The Monterey Pine (Pinus Radiata) is a pine tree native to the central coast area of California and on two islands in Baja belonging to Mexico. Because it is a fast-growing species, it is widely grown in plantations around the world. It is the leading introduced tree species in New Zealand. While this species of pine can be found around the world, it is under threat in its natural growing range.
