Emergents are the giants of the forest. These ancient trees emerge above the canopy of the rainforest. Some trees can be over 1000 years old. In the southern podocarp forests of the North Island, emergents include: Kahikatea, Rimu, Totara, Matai, Miro, and both northern and southern rata.
