Butterflies are a group of insects in the order Lepidoptera. They are characterized by their colorful wings and their slender bodies. Butterflies undergo complete metamorphosis, going through four life stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult. They are known for their graceful and fluttering flight, which is accomplished by the rapid flapping of their large, veined wings. Butterflies are found all over the world and can be found in a wide range of habitats, from forests and meadows to deserts and mountains. They play an important role in pollination and are also used as indicator species to monitor the health of their ecosystem.
