Calabash gourds on display in a street market in Buenos Aires. Mate is a traditional South American hot water drink which is particularly popular in Argentina. Like coffee or tea, it contains caffeine which is infused from the dried leaves of the yerba mate, an evergreen herbal tree. Mate is served in a container called a calabash gourd and the drink is consumed using a metal straw.
