Tonga Eruption: What happened and why?

Satellite images show the scale of the disastrous Tonga Eruption.

The eruption of an underwater volcano sent shock waves in the air and sea. The explosion could be heard as far away as Alaska and a tsunami affected coastlines in countries including New Zealand, Australia, and the United States.

Around 105,000 residents on the islands were cut off from the rest of the world as internet and phone lines went down.
