One Tree Hill is a volcanic peak and part of the Auckland Volcanic Field. Most volcanic peaks in this field are used as recreational reserves. It is typical to find a scenic walk to a lookout atop each peak. Most are covered in grass and some even have farm animals grazing on the pasture.
