Medellín is the capital of Antioquia Department and second-largest city in Colombia. It is located in the Aburrá Valley within the northern end of the South American Andes mountains the city spreads up the side of steep mountains offering many spectacular vantage points. The city enjoys a near perfect climate with an average daily temperatures are 22ºC (71ºF) and a range between 15 to 30ºC (60º-85ºF) and comfortable humidity.
While Medellin had more than its fair share of Colombian problems in the past, today the city is renown for its industrial dynamism and in 2013, Medellin was awarded the ‘Innovative City of the Year’ by The Wall Street Journal which beat out both New York and Tel Aviv.
The city has a number of tourist attractions including:
- Metrocable: Given this topography of the city the metro system goes through the valley from north to south and connects with a number of gondola lift systems called Metrocable which take tourists and locals to a number of suburbs high up in the hills that surround the city.
- Pueblito Paisa: Located on Nutibara Hill which affords great views of the surrounding city, is the quintessential Antioquian village of Pueblito Paisa. This village inside the city of Medellin is a popular tourist attraction. It has a small sqquare with shops, a church, and a restaurant.
- Palacio de la Cultura: This building is a wonderful piece of architecture. Constructed using around 1.1 million bricks, this huge building is conveniently located between Prado Metro Station and the popular Plaza Botero in the city center.
- Plaza Botero: This city square is full of sculptures donated by Botero a famous Colombian artist who was born in Medellin. Adjacent is the Museum (Museo) de Antioquia and the famous Palacio de la Cultura.
- Bolívar Park: is a beautiful urban park named in honour of the liberator Simón Bolívar.
- El Poblado: This district containing 24 suburbs is the wealthiest in Medellin. With much quality housing, there are lots of examples of modern architecture and is the industrial hub and center of Medellin.
- Museums: The city is full of interesting museums such as: Museo de Antioquia, Museo Universidad de Antioquia, Casa Museo Fernando González, Museo Pedro Nel Gómez, Museo Interactivo EPM, Museo Etnográfico Miguel Angel Builes, and Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellin (MAMM).
- Shopping Malls: Medellin has a number of great shopping malls. Included are: El Tesoro Parque Comercia, Oviedo centro comercial,, San Diego centro comercial, Outlet Mayorca, Premium Plaza, Monterrey, and Santa Fe centro comercial.
