Kapiti Island is an island located off the south western coast of the North Island. It is designated as a nature reserve and protected area for New Zealand birds. It adjoins the Kapiti Marine Reserve. It is home to many species of New Zealand birds including rare species like the little blue penguin, takahe, North Island kōkako, stitchbird (hihi), North Island saddleback (tieke), brown teal, and a number of species of kiwi.
