Franz Josef Glacier is located on the West Coast region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is one of the most famous and accessible glaciers in the country, attracting thousands of visitors each year. The glacier was named after the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Josef I in the late 19th century.
The glacier stretches over 12 kilometers (approximately 7.5 miles) and descends from the Southern Alps down to the lush rainforest of Westland Tai Poutini National Park. It is part of the larger Westland Tai Poutini National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its stunning landscapes and lush vegetation.
