About

No photos of Fiordland National Park can quite capture this incredible landscape that bundles majestic mountains, deep fiords, countless waterfalls, and lush rainforest.

Fiordland is a world heritage area called Te Wahipounamu – South West New Zealand. It has national park status, and forms the major part of this protected wilderness area.

The landscape of Fiordland is otherworldly. It has exaggerated mountainous landscape with innumerable lakes and waterfalls. The mountain peaks receive snow during the year, and the run off from melting snow and rain forms countless waterfall. Some of the waterfalls here make the list of the world’s tallest.

The most striking physical feature of Fiordland are the fiords (fjords). Reminiscent of Norway, the landscape consists of glacial carved valleys that have been flooded by the sea. Both Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound are by definitions not sounds but fiords. While they are not as long as their Norwegian counterparts, they are twice as high.

Millions of visitors flock to see this natural wonderland of rock, water, and ice.  Sheer mountain cliffs rise up as high as one mile from the sea. Hundreds of waterfalls lined up side by side thunder into the sea below. Raging rivers crash their way through dense forests. Dripping moss laden rainforest covers every surface imaginable until the altitude gets too high and tussock, bare rock, and  snow take over.

Fiordland’s landscapes are epic and have featured in a number of blockbuster movies like Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and Jurassic Park. A visit to Fiordland will have you convinced that you have seen the best scenery that planet Earth has on offer.
