About Eastbourne
Our photos of Lower Hutt include the city, suburbs, and local natural environments like the sea, rivers, forest, and mountains.
Eastbourne is a picturesque coastal suburb of Lower Hutt, situated on the eastern shore of Wellington Harbour. Surrounded by sheltered beaches and the forested hills of East Harbour Regional Park, it is known for its relaxed seaside atmosphere, scenic walks and spectacular views across the harbour towards Wellington. The village centre, around Rimu Street, features cafés, shops and other local businesses, while nearby Days Bay is a popular destination for swimming, picnicking and ferry excursions.
The area has a rich Māori history, with settlements and fortified pā once occupying the sheltered bays and surrounding headlands. European settlement expanded during the late 19th century, when Eastbourne became a popular seaside retreat for Wellington residents, particularly following the introduction of regular ferry services. Named after the English seaside town, Eastbourne became an independent borough in 1906 before amalgamating with Lower Hutt in 1989. Today, it retains much of its original village character and serves as a gateway to the beaches, bush tracks and historic landmarks of Wellington’s eastern coastline.
