About

View our photos of Hamilton Island in the Whitsunday Islands.

Located in the Whitsunday Island group in tropical Queensland Australia, Hamilton Island is the largest inhabited island in the group of 74. It offers a big range of accommodation options from apartments to idyllic holiday homes and even has its own airport.

There is a small town or settlement with one main street near a marina where most of the shops, restaurants, and grocery stores are located. While there is a road network around the island, cars are banned with the main mode of transport being golf buggies which are available for hire. The southern part of the island has no roads and is a natural reserve with some great walks and views from the highest peak – Passage Peak.

The island itself is set within one of the world’s natural wonders – the Great Barrier Reef. On offer are dive tours as well as excursions to world famous Whitehaven Beach on untouched Whitsunday Island. Whitehaven is regarded as one of the finest beaches in the world mainly because of its sheer size, pure white silica sand, and colorful corals.

Hamilton Island has a reputation as a rich man’s paradise with superyachts and boats on display showing off the wealth of the islands inhabitants. The island featured in the movie Muriel’s Wedding and also has a strong Beatles connection. George Harrison owned a house on Hamilton Island from the late 1980s. He and his wife spent much time here to get away from all the fanfare in Europe and America.

Hamilton Island is a photographers paradise where you can take photos of stunning beaches, corals, native bush, and with scenic walk to a peak that offers views of surrounding islands.
