About Mussoorie

Our photos of Mussoorie were taken in the year 1990. Consequently, they capture a rare moment in time. Back then, the town was based around local tourism, while international travelers rarely visited.

Mussoorie is located in the foothills of the Himalayas, about 290 km from New Delhi in the northern state of Himachal Predesh. It is a tourist town for Indian residents and a favorite honeymoon spot.

With an average altitude of 1,880 metres (6,170 ft), the town provides relief from the summer heat that is experienced in the nearby plains. In winter however, you can expect cold weather, even snow.

There are many things to do here including: a number of scenic walks for views of the Himalayas; a short trip to Lake Mist & Kempty Falls; a visit to Happy Valley – a Tibetan settlement; walk through peaceful Dhanaulti forest; a stroll through Company Garden – a beautiful park; visit Tibetan Buddhist Temple; and see the former residence of famous surveyor “George Everest”.

Mussoorie was home to the 14th Dalai Lama during the 1959 Tibetan Rebellion. He later moved to Dharamsala. Today there are about 5,000 Tibetans who live permanently in Mussoorie.
