They are made up of small, soft-bodied creatures called polyps that secrete a hard, calcium carbonate exoskeleton. Corals can be found in a wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, and they can form a variety of reef structures, including fringing reefs, barrier reefs, and atolls.
