The Julia heliconian is found in many parts of Central and South America, including Colombia. In Colombia, it is commonly found in the Andean regions, where it inhabits a wide range of habitats, including cloud forests, humid lowlands and dry forests. The butterfly can be found at elevations ranging from sea level to around 1,500 meters above sea level.
