Shaman in the Amazon are known for inducing altered states of consciousness. They do this by entering a trance after ingesting Ayahuasca (yagé). Through a ritual process with other participants, this brew of plant extracts is consumed. At first it causes nausea and possibly diarrhea. This however is considered part of the cleansing process before the hallucinogenic effect takes place.
