The Amazon alligator, also known as the black caiman, is a crocodilian species found in South America, primarily in the Amazon and Orinoco basins. They are one of the largest predator in the Amazon river and its tributaries, and can grow up to 6 meters (20 ft) in length and weigh as much as 600 kg (1300 lb). They are dark blackish-gray in color, with a broad snout and powerful jaws.
