The Beehive is one of Wellington’s most recognisable landmarks and serves as the Executive Wing of New Zealand’s Parliament Buildings. Designed by British architect Sir Basil Spence in the 1960s, its distinctive circular shape and stepped floors earned it the nickname “The Beehive.” Construction began in 1969 and was completed in 1981, with the building now housing the offices of the Prime Minister and other government ministers. Its unique design stands in contrast to the more traditional architecture of the neighbouring Parliamentary Library and Parliament House.
