Somes Island lies in the centre of Wellington Harbour in New Zealand. The largest of three islands, it is a stronghold for several animal species. Included is the spotted skink, the little blue penguin, shags, and the silver gull. On the other side of the harbor is Eastbourne. This suburb is connected to Wellington by a ferry and a ring road. The mountains in the background form part of the Remutaka range.
