Lake Tarawera is one of many lakes in Rotorua, New Zealand. While the lake is serene, it wasn’t always like that. It was the location of the country’s most violent volcanic eruption in recent times. In 1886, nearby Mt Tarawera blasted lava and rocks onto the surrounding land leading to the deaths of 186 people. It also destroying New Zealand’s biggest tourist attraction, the famous Pink and White Terraces. Mt Tarawera is visible in the top-right of this image.
