Spirits Bay is located on the northern tip of the North Island of New Zealand. For the Maori it is the departure point for spirits of the dead travelling to the afterlife. The beach itself extends for 12 km (7.5 mi) and is connected to State Highway 1 by a long and windy dirt road. Behind the beach is a campsite run by the Department of Conservation (DOC).
