The takahē is endemic to New Zealand. It is a flightless bird that likes to live in swampy areas, but can live on grassy plains too. They are highly endangered with under 300 left. It was once considered extinct, but was rediscovered in Fiordland’s Murchison Mountains. From a tiny population, conservation efforts have seen their numbers rise. This bird was photographed in the Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre on Mt Bruce in the Tararua Ranges.
