Kōkako is a highly endangered bird endemic to New Zealand. It is one of three New Zealand wattlebird species, the others are the saddleback and the extinct Huia. Kōkako have a beautiful song with breeding pairs sounding like a duet. While not a flightless bird like many New Zealand species, they are not great at flying and prefer to hop from branch to branch or glide. This bird was photographed at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre on Mt Bruce.
