Birchville Dam is recognized as the second unreinforced concrete arch dam dedicated to water supply in New Zealand. Erected in 1930 by the Upper Hutt Borough Council to enhance the borough’s water capacity, it stands along Clarke’s Creek near Birchville, replacing an earlier water supply weir from 1913–1914. After its decommissioning in 1958 due to Upper Hutt’s transition to the Wellington regional water scheme, the dam has evolved into a prominent historical landmark along the Cannon Point Walkway.
