To the west is Australia, Fji is east, Vanuatu to the north, and New Zealand to the south. New Caledonia forms part of a mostly submerged continent called Zealandia which also includes New Zealand. This continent has in the past been above sea level meaning that New Zealand and New Caledonia were once joined together.
