During the bicentenary celebrations in 1988, the Prince and Princess of Wales visited Australia. The Duke and Duchess of York, and the Duke and Duchess of Kent also visited.
This photo was taken on a day where the mercury reached 43 degrees Celsius (109.4 fahrenheit). That day, I stopped in Mount Isa to get some lunch. I walked across a field and right in front of me was Lady Diana. I walked past debating if I had really seen her on a 43 degree day in Mount Isa. Then I saw Prince Charles and one other person. I just kept walking wondering what to make of it all. I got lunch and then returned. By this time, many schools had turned up to this area and realised it was a visit by the royal family. I took one photo of the event and then left Mount Isa.
The Queen and Prince Philip also made a visit in 1988. On 30 April, the Queen opened the World Expo in Brisbane and later opened the new permanent Parliament House in Canberra on the 9th of May.
