ABOUT
View our photos of Bogota in Colombia. This South American metropolis offers a mix of modern and Spanish colonial architecture set upon a high plateau within the Andes mountains.
Bogota is the capital and largest city of Colombia. The city resides in the Andes at an altitude of 2640 meters (8,660 feet) above sea level. This gives rise to a cooler climate than its sub-tropical latitude would otherwise suggest. While temperatures are consistent throughout the year, they rarely rise over 20 degrees Celsius (60F).
Attractions worth visiting:
- Chapinero is the new downtown area of Bogota. It has modern office and residential buildings and shops, restaurants, and cafes
- La Candelaria was the first suburb of Bogota. Constructed in the 1530s, the city grew around it. Consequently, it has great examples of colonial architecture as well as old cobblestone streets. It is also a university district and the present site of Colombia’s government.
- La Merced is a historic neighborhood resembling an upper class neighborhoods of London. Constructed by BP Oil, the homes housed executives with the intent of making them feel as much at home as possible. Today these houses are occupied by businesses, clubs, and universities.
- La Macarena is the location of the bullfight ring with a number of art galleries, cafes, and restaurants nearby.
- Parque de la 93 is the premier area of the city for nightclubs, bars, and cafes.
- Sante Fe is Bogota’s central business district where the city’s tall buildings reside. The nearby mountains of Monserrate and Guadalupe offer unhindered views of the city below.
- San Victorino is jam packed with shops selling clothes, shoes, fabrics, and just about everything else at a bargain. A great place to get a suit made to measure.
- Santa Barbara includes the 1665 Church of Santa Barbara and Square. There are plenty of shopping areas including: Hacienda Santa Barbara, and Unicentro Mall. An outdoor market here called Mercado de las Pulgas sells national arts and crafts.
- Usaquén is a northern district containing suburbs rich in colonial architecture, restaurants, and bars. Santa Barbara is the crown jewel here.
