The Iguaçu River (also spelled Iguazú or Iguaçú) is a river that flows through Brazil and Argentina. It is known for its incredible natural beauty and for being the main watercourse that feeds into the famous Iguaçu Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most impressive waterfall systems in the world.
The Iguaçu River originates in the Serra do Mar coastal mountains in the state of Paraná, Brazil, and it flows for about 1,320 kilometers (820 miles) before it joins the Paraná River on the border between Brazil and Argentina. The river forms part of the boundary between these two countries.
The most iconic feature of the Iguaçu River is the Iguaçu Falls, a series of waterfalls that span the river along the border between Brazil’s state of Paraná and Argentina’s Misiones Province. The falls consist of approximately 275 individual drops and vary in height, with the tallest drop being around 82 meters (269 feet). The largest and most well-known waterfall within the Iguaçu Falls system is called “Garganta do Diabo” or “Devil’s Throat,” where a significant volume of water plunges dramatically.
The Iguaçu Falls and the surrounding national parks in both Brazil and Argentina are renowned for their biodiversity and unique ecosystems. The area is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species, including several endangered ones. Tourists from all around the world visit the Iguaçu Falls to witness this breathtaking natural wonder and explore the surrounding natural landscapes.
