About Puerto Iguazu
View photos of Puerto Iguazu in Argentina.
Located in the Misiones province, Puerto Iguazú is a tourist town that serves as the main departure point for Iguazú Falls a mere 18 kilometre away. The town has a range of accommodation options from backpackers to hotels as well as a good number of restaurants and tour operators.
Puerto Iguazú is located on the banks of Iguazú River which is the river where Iguazu Falls is located. This river forms the border between Argentina and Brazil. Foz do Iguaçu a nearby town in Brazil is connected by a bridge to Puerto Iguazú and the falls themselves are located in both countries by sharing opposite sides of the river and waterfall complex.
Besides the river forming national borders, the falls divide the river into the upper and lower Iguazu. The name “Iguazú” in the Tupi language means ‘water’, and ‘ûasú’ means ‘big’. Puerto means ‘port in Spanish.
Puerto Iguazu has an international airport called ‘Cataratas del Iguazú International Airport’. The word ‘Cataratas’ is Spanish for waterfalls.
Most travelers will not go to the falls immediately, but will head to Puerto Iguazú to sort out accommodation. Once that is sorted, you can purchase a pass that gives you access to the park for a day, thus travelling the next day to get a full day’s access. You can add on an extra day tour to the Brazilian side of the falls which usually includes a visa for the day and a meal at the end of the tour.
