About Fafa Island
View photos of Fafa Island off the coast of Nuku’alofa, the capital of Tonga.
Fafa Island is the most scenic of islands available by boat on a day trip from Nuku’alofa. The island is a mere 30 minutes away. Surrounded by a coral reef, Fafa offers great diving and safe swimming. The beaches are superb and the water is crystal clear. The island has a forested interior and has a 30-minute loop walk that takes you out to different parts of the coast. During high tide parts of the coast become submerged. This includes some beaches and the water goes a fair distance inland at one low lying part of the island. Low tide allows you to walk around the island via the coast. This includes walking on sand through a mangrove forest.
There are no settlements on the island, but there is a good resort called ‘Fafa Island Resort’. It is eco-friendly and constructed from local materials and offers a good standard of accommodation and tasty food. Day visitors to the island can come here on a organized tour that includes return transport to the island and meals at the resort.
