Atata Island photos
About
Our photos of Atata Island gives you an idea of the life and culture of this small island in Tonga. The island has some great beaches and a small settlement with friendly locals.
Atata Island can be accessed from the capital Nuku'alofa on neighboring Tongatapu Island. Ferries depart for Atata and other outlying coral cays that are visible from the main ferry port.
Life on Atata is relaxed. The locals are not rich by any stretch of the imagination, but they live in a paradise without the luxuries of life. While most of the dwellings are humble, they often come with solar panels and the warm climate means that heating is no issue. Rain water is also collected as there are no rivers on the island.
The island is circular with no beaches, but a big peninsula to the south has golden-orange colored sand on both coasts. Most visitors keep to the western coastline where the swimming and diving are good. If you venturing over to the other coast you will see wild pigs roaming on the beach.
Through the center of the peninsula is a walking path that connects many of the homes here and takes you into the main settlement where there are some community buildings and more houses. At the end of the peninsula is a resort.
Besides a small diving tour, the island doesn't really cater for many tourists, but therein lies its appeal. It is relatively untouched and gives you a unique experience of the island's culture. A culture that is easy to capture when exploring and taking photos of Atata Island.
