Whanganui is situated on the banks of the Whanganui River, which is the country’s third-longest river.
Whanganui’s history dates back to early Māori settlements. In more recent times, the city has become a popular for various outdoor activities such as river cruises, hiking, and exploring nearby Whanganui National Park.
The Whanganui River is considered a taonga (treasure) by local iwi. In 2017, the Whanganui River became the world’s first river to be granted legal personhood, recognizing its intrinsic value and significance to the Māori people and the community as a whole.
