Taking photos in Queenstown doesn’t require a special talent. You can point the camera at random and likely get a postcard. Such is the packed scenery in this part of New Zealand.
Queenstown is the premier tourist town of the South Island. It is an alpine wonderland surrounded by mountains, snow, and a huge lake. On offer is some of the best skiing in the southern hemisphere. With an international airport, it is well placed to receive tourists during the northern hemisphere summer.
Ski fields in Queenstown
In order of close proximity to the town center:
- Coronet Peak is the most popular ski area with stunning views of the Southern Alps,;
- The Remarkables has quality powder snow high up in the amazing Remarkables range;
- Cardrona gets reliable snow and is the second largest ski area in the region;
- Treble Cone has the longest vertical rise in the Queenstown with other interesting terrain for skiing.
Adrenalin activities that can be enjoyed all year round include: jet boating, bungee jumping, canyon swinging, and skydiving
Other Activities
- Ride on the Skyline Gondola for stunning views of Queenstown with access to bungee jumping, The Luge, Parapenting, and a restaurant with a view like no other;
- Queenstown is the Bungy Jumping capital with the world’s first commercial bungy jump at Kawarau Bridge. Other sites include the famous Skippers Canyon and The Ledge Bungee at the Gondola;
- Take a cruise on Lake Wakatipu to see views of Queenstown and the surrounding mountains;
- Jet boating on the Shotover River or Kawarau Gorge;
- Walk around town or hike on one of the many tracks here. Or do one of the great walks in nearby Fiordland National Park;
- Wine tasting at nearby vineyards which are the southern most vineyards in the world.
Striking out further afield, you could visit Fiordland National Park one of the scenic gems of New Zealand. This is the land of gigantic fiords, thousands of waterfalls, and ancient rain forests. The landscape here is extraordinary and has been the backdrop for many movies. Films like Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Jurassic Park: The Lost World, Alien: Covenant, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
