About Napier
Napier, often called the “Art Deco Capital of New Zealand,” is a coastal city on the eastern shore of New Zealand’s North Island in the Hawke’s Bay region. Known for its striking Art Deco architecture, Napier was largely rebuilt in this style after a devastating earthquake in 1931 that destroyed much of the town. The earthquake led to a massive reconstruction effort during the 1930s, and today, Napier is internationally celebrated for its well-preserved Art Deco buildings, drawing visitors and architecture enthusiasts from around the world.
The city boasts a vibrant cultural scene and has a strong wine industry, with the surrounding Hawke’s Bay region being one of New Zealand’s most renowned wine-producing areas. The area is particularly famous for red wines, especially Merlot and Syrah, as well as Chardonnays. Napier’s annual Art Deco Festival, held each February, celebrates its architectural heritage and the 1930s with vintage cars, fashion, and entertainment.
