About Mount Cook

View photos of Mount Cook National Park, an alpine park located in the South Island of New Zealand.

Mount Cook National Park in New Zealand is an alpine park located in the Southern Alps. Features in the park include a number of peaks over 3000 metres, glaciers, and some glacial lakes. While the park is a rugged alpine wilderness, wild lupins of all colours grow here, which gives the area a more gentle and picturesque look.

The main feature of the park is Mt Cook (Aoraki), the highest mountain in New Zealand and Australasia. It is 3,724 metres (12,218 ft) above sea level and sits in the vicinity of other peaks over 3000 metres including neigbouring Mt Sefton and Mount Tasman. Nearby Tasman Glacier is the longest in the country and has a 29km (12.5 mi) long ski run. Skiers are taken to the top of the glacier by plane or helicopter and then ski back down.
