The Akatarawa Forest, a regional park sprawling across approximately 15,500 hectares from Upper Hutt to the Kapiti Coast, boasts a rich blend of native woodland and forest plantations nestled within rugged valleys and ravines. Renowned for its recreational offerings, the park features numerous bushwalks and mountain bike trails, drawing outdoor enthusiasts year-round.

Amidst the forest’s expanse, ancient Northern Rata trees stand as silent witnesses to time, with some dating back around 1,100 years. Moreover, the park serves as a vital watershed for the region, nurturing the headwaters of the Maungakotukutuku Stream, Akatarawa River West, and the Whakatīkei River.

A notable historical landmark within the park is the Birchville Dam, which supplied water to Wellington until its decommissioning in 1958.
