Abel Tasman National Park is a picturesque destination that offers a stunning blend of sandy beaches, native forests, fresh water streams, and natural pools. The park is also a haven for birdlife, making it a photographer’s dream.

Located on the northern coast of the South Island, the park features one of New Zealand’s great walks, the Abel Tasman Walk. Outside the park, road access extends to either side of the reserve, but beyond that, visiting the beaches requires either walking or taking a boat. The three-day trek is a popular option, but visitors can also opt for a partial trek or travel by boat direct to an isolated bay.

The park’s beaches are the main attraction. The sand ranges from white to gold, and the Tasman Sea’s crystal-clear water lap the shore. The native forest, contains ferns and manuka, which is home to birds like the tui and bellbird. Fresh water streams inside the forest offer pools where you can take a dip into some fresh water.

The park is accessible from the town of Kaiteriteri, which boasts its own stunning beach. Visitors can take a boat from Kaiteriteri to the park’s eastern entrance at Marahau or drive there, but boat tour offers a scenic experience worth considering. The western entrance at Totaranui is accessible via a winding drive over a large hill, which passes through some beautiful native bush. Alternatively, visitors can drive to Wainui Bay further west and walk around to Totaranui via several scenic bays. Totaranui has a large camping area, amenities, and an information center.

Abel Tasman National Park offers a natural paradise of beaches, bush, and wildlife. It is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts.
