Nitmiluk National Park is a popular national park located in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is known for its stunning natural beauty, dramatic landscapes, and cultural significance. The park is situated approximately 240 kilometers southeast of Darwin, the capital city of the Northern Territory.

Formerly known as Katherine Gorge National Park, Nitmiluk National Park is managed jointly by the traditional Jawoyn owners and the Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory. The name “Nitmiluk” means “cicada place” in the local Jawoyn Aboriginal language, referring to the large number of cicadas found in the area during the warm months.

The main attraction of Nitmiluk National Park is the Katherine Gorge, a series of thirteen deep sandstone gorges carved out by the Katherine River. Visitors can explore the gorges by taking boat cruises, canoeing, or participating in guided tours. The towering cliffs, tranquil waters, and abundant wildlife make it a picturesque destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers.

Aside from the gorges, the national park offers various hiking trails that allow visitors to explore the surrounding landscapes. The Jatbula Trail is a popular multi-day hike that stretches for approximately 60 kilometers, taking hikers through diverse terrain and providing breathtaking views along the way. Other shorter walks and lookout points offer opportunities to appreciate the park’s unique flora, fauna, and geological formations.
