About The Blue Mountains

View our photos of The Blue Mountains near Sydney in Australia. An incredible natural attraction of the highest calibre existing alongside a major urban center.

The Blue Mountains get it’s name from the blue haze created by the mix of eucalypt forests, water vapour, and sunlight. The area consists canyons and sandstone tablelands and is protected within Blue Mountains National Park. Unlike many other canyons of the world however, this place gets reliable rainfall. Consequently, there exists lush temperate rainforest covering the canyon with waterfalls leaping great heights of sheer cliff walls. Below the ground is the Jenolan Caves system which has underground rivers and limestone crystals.

The canyons attract an abundance of wildlife. Included are the myriad colorful bird species which are easy to spot darting among the trees. The usual line-up of kangaroos, wallabies, and koalas exist here as do the harder to see bats, gliders, skinks, frogs, and Tiger Quolls.

The park is located on the edge of Katoomba, the biggest town in the Blue Mountains area. The town itself is a tourist attraction with art deco buildings housing numerous accommodation options, dining, tourist shops, and entertainment venues. There are also tourist based activities that can be organized like rock climbing, abseiling, and numerous guided walks and treks.
