About Ballarat
View our photos of Ballarat, a historic city in Australia. This former goldmining town is famous for its museums, memorials, and beautiful architecture.
Ballarat is the third largest city in Victoria. You can drive from Melbourne in about 80–90 minutes. Once you arrive, there is plenty to do. On offer are a number of art galleries and museums that document the town’s interesting history. There are also war memorials, parks and gardens, as well as a wildlife park.
The main attraction is the city itself which has many 19th century heritage buildings. The reason for the beautiful architecture is simple. This town sprung up from a goldrush meaning there was plenty of money in the local economy. This resulted in more opulent buildings compared to other towns in the Victorian era. Today, these buildings are used for business, shops, and many cafes and eateries.
If you wish to strike out further afield, there are some great wineries you can visit. For something really special, you could drive to Grampians National Park in two hours. This park is famous for its stunning uplifted landscapes where mountains rise abruptly from the surrounding plains. The park is a haven for wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, and an incredible array of native birds. which are very easy to spot.
Melbourne, Ballarat, Grampians National Park, and the Great Ocean Road make for a fantastic round trip that offers the best scenery and city life you can experience in the state of Victoria.
