View of Buckingham Palace in the City of Westminster in the year 1960. The City of Westminster is wholly located inside Greater London as is the city of London. In 1761, King George III purchased the property for Queen Charlotte. In the 19th century it underwent renovations with construction of three additional wings surrounding a courtyard. Then in 1837 it became the residence of Queen Victoria and in In 1851 she made the first ever public appearance on the palace balcony which became a tradition that continues to this day. It remains the residence for the monarchy of the United Kingdom to this day.
