A tapir is a large, herbivorous mammal that is native to Central and South America, and Southeast Asia. There are four species, all of which are considered to be threatened or endangered. They are characterized by their round bodies, short snouts, and thick, prehensile upper lips, which they use to grasp foliage. They also have small eyes, small ears, and a short tail. Tapirs have short, coarse fur that is typically brown or black in color.
