Somes Island lies in the centre of Wellington Harbour in New Zealand. The largest of three islands, it is a stronghold for several animal species including: the spotted skink, the little blue penguin, a number of shag species, and the silver gull. The settlement on the other side of the island is the suburb of Eastbourne which is connected to Wellington city by a ferry and also a ring road. The mountains in the background form part of the Rimutaka range.
