The kiwi is the national bird of New Zealand. It is nocturnal and flightless. Its nose is at the end of its beak and it lays the biggest egg for its body size of any bird in the world. There are a five species which range from vulnerable to critically endangered. Because they cannot fly, they are vulnerable to introduced species such as rats, stoats, and possums.
