The Kanak are the indigenous people of New Caledonia. Being of Melanesian descent their exact origins are unclear. What is clear, is they have intermarried with Polynesians over the centuries. They live throughout all the inhabited islands of New Caledonia, but more so in the Loyalty Islands where their traditional way of life is preserved. They constitute around 40% of the total population of the country. On Grande Terre (the main island), they are a minority, as people of French descent form the majority.
