The City of Los Angeles (L.A.) is the most populous city in California and second-most populous in the USA. Located in the Los Angeles Basin between the coast and a number of mountain ranges, the city has both flat and hilly areas. The view from Hollywood Hills to downtown L.A. for example is the impression most people have of the city's topography. L.A., enjoys a Mediterranean climate and gets just enough rain to avoid being classified as semi-arid. Further inland and over the Santa Gabriel Mountains lies the Mojave Desert and Death Valley. Famous landmarks of Los Angeles include: Hollywood, Universal City (Universal Studios), and Downtown L.A. Nearby attractions not strictly in L.A. include: Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive, Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica Beach, Newport Beach, and Disneyland.
